Founder of Ghana Education Trust Fund, and former Minister of Education, Trade & Industry (Ghanaian National)

Ekwow Spio-Garbrah’s career reflects more than 35 years of experience at senior levels within the spheres of International Organisations, Education and Knowledge Management, Banking and Finance, Government, Diplomacy and Church Administration with a focus on Institutional Leadership, General Management, External Relations and Communication, Financial and Resource Mobilisation, and Board-level institutional governance.

Spio-Garbrah was appointed Chairman of the African Education Trust Fund, where he leads a Pan-African committee of eminent professors, academics and

educational sector planners and professionals in establishing a Continent-wide body to oversee funding for African educational initiatives. The Committee is building unique stakeholder partnerships across Africa to emulate the example of Ghana where he led a similar team of Ghanaians to a Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) in the Year 2000.

Earlier, Spio-Garbrah worked in Washington, D.C., for the International Finance Corporation and later became Head of Communications for the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group. He was part of the AfDB team that created the African Export-Import Bank. He also served as Ghana’s ambassador to the United States and Mexico, and was a former Ghanaian Minister for Trade and Industry, former Minister of Communication, former Minister of Education and a former Acting Minister of Mines & Energy. He was the first African CEO of the 110-year-old Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO) based in London, which he led in a variety of ICT/telecom infrastructure operations in most developing regions of the world. Ekwow served as President of the Dominion University College, and is currently the Chairman of the African Business Center for Developing Education (ABCDE), a non-governmental organisation dedicated to bridging the gap between the world of corporate knowledge and experience, and that of secondary and tertiary-level classrooms.
